Ortega y Gasset
Abstract
Reply to those demanding he ‘define himself’ politically after ‘El error Berenguer’: Ortega refuses, declares he represents nobody, and defines the intellectual’s trade as one where authority must be re-earned every day, line by line. A personal-polemical column.

Si no, quedará automáticamente eliminado.
On the 5th of February, shortly after the Berenguer Government was constituted, I published in El Sol an article titled «Organization of national decency». The doctrine of that article and that of the article that appeared recently under the heading «The Berenguer error» are identical. The expression in both is a little different, because the occasion also was. Nevertheless, the so-called «lefts», once more, my prose annoyed them then. Now I must say that the formulas of the old article seem to me technically more rigorous than those of the recent one. It is true that in them I showed no insistence on «defining myself». But will someone tell me what importance it had whether I defined myself or not? What broken bone of Spain is fixed by that? I am very sorry; but I have spent twenty-five years combating the village-like and ridiculous level at which the public life of Spain is acted and thought, and there is no reason for me to accept it now. If I have not been in a hurry to «define myself», it is because I consider that this interests no one. Everyone knows that I do not «count» for anything, that I represent nobody, although some people read me; that I have not enough social force to command a blind man to sing; that I live in a corner with a few companions of work dedicated to studies, which mean little in the public life of Spain and less in its political life. Was it wanted that I hasten to boom my voice and sing the aria of my definition, just like that, with two or three magic words, when I have been writing on politics for a quarter of a century? Come now, man! I am not a solemn gentleman who fraudulently attributes to himself values and powers he does not possess. I have always presented myself before my compatriots, let us say in the pure idiom, as an intellectual with no cover, without protections, wraps, or attached supports; therefore, as a man who offers his thoughts on national and human matters, who tries to define things; nothing more. If his ideas are discreet, his labor will be fertile and respectable. If not, he will be automatically eliminated. For that reason the intellectual, whatever the stage of his life, cannot content himself with making count a supposed authority achieved by his previous work. No; he has to re-earn that authority ever anew, each day, in each line he writes, managing to make it intelligent. This is what the intellectual calling has of marvelously clean; it is also what it has of terribly hard and dramatic.
It seems to me that what I have spoken of myself is more than sufficient. But it was necessary, as it is necessary in executing the second rule of arithmetic to speak of the subtrahend, precisely to subtract it, to throw it out of the account. It was necessary, because in this season I have to speak to the public of very grave questions, and it is necessary that my relations with it go very clean. Let it be recorded, then, that at this date there is no one, absolutely no one, behind my words. The public must grant them only the authority that they, one by one and line by line (in context with all my work), deserve, plus what it may kindly wish to grant or not grant to my person. If on another date things change and behind my words there are people, many people, I shall have the right to say it to the reader and the reader will have the obligation to believe me.
