Abstract
A request to the minister of education to mount a Zuloaga exhibition, not as homage but as a pedagogical act: Zuloaga’s painting throws one back on the Spanish problem and is a national examination of conscience. It includes a definition of genius as an experimental value and a secular perspective (‘genial are the creations that can still bear children’).

Among easy things, the most important that the minister of Public Instruction could now attempt would be, in my opinion, a Zuloaga Exhibition. It is not a question of a homage: homages are being done every day, and it will almost come to be a distinction that is awarded to men of true merit not to consecrate any homage to them. Men of great worth are not creditors of these pleasant perquisites: they have enough with their own substance. The pleasure of the great artist or the great thinker upon finding himself with the completed work before him, still tender, of creation, pays overabundantly the grave efforts condensed in it. The convenience of a Zuloaga Exhibition is founded on its utility for us who were to visit it. And is not the Ministry of Public Instruction and Fine Arts put there for this? Its function is not to reward the merits of Spaniards triumphant with the pen or the brush; it is rather to make culture possible, to foster in the anonymous mass elevated concerns, to raise in the public atmosphere motives of a superior vitality and to cause the triviality of civic commerce to be often broken by diffuse currents of ideal values. I do not conceive that a minister of Public Instruction should remain satisfied if at the end of each month he does not have the certainty of having enriched the Spanish consciousness with a new cultural theme. His dignity is the highest in a European society; it is the modern form of that other divine magistracy which over the torrid fields of Pharan exercised Aaron, brother of Moses. It would be shameful that he should content himself with administering the national pedagogical services: at the head of the educational personnel it belongs to the minister the ardent activity of first teacher. Why should he not occupy himself in soliciting the great European personalities to give lectures in Spain? The great explorers —Sven Hedin, Peary—, the great men of letters —France, Lemaître, Pascoli, Bernard Shaw—, the great thinkers —Bergson, Croce, Simmel?…
This petition that a Zuloaga Exhibition be organized has a pedagogical sense, the best sense, the most fecund that a thing can have. The pilgrimage of the egregious canvases with their barbarous figures through the castizo lands from which they came will stir many moldy nerves, will raise disputes, will break putrefied opinions, will clarify some thoughts, and, in not a few despiritualized houses, once the tablecloths are gathered after the brutally brief dinner to which the minister of Finance obliges, one will speak of aesthetics, thanks to the minister of Fine Arts.
And not only of aesthetics: in Zuloaga’s painting hearts rebound and go to stop straight before the Spanish problem; his paintings are like spiritual exercises that push us, more than carry us, to an examination of national conscience. Now then, this is the greatest, the most glorious thing that a Hispanic artist can do for the future of his race: put it in contact with itself, shake it and wound it until its sensibility is totally awakened. Endow it with intimacy.
I do not know to what point it is apt to employ the words of highest praise referring to Zuloaga. Maeztu has called him «genius». This is, of course, excessive: geniuses are only the dead. Genius is a slow condensation of human values upon the works of certain men, who as geniuses were incommensurable with their epoch. The genius-like is a secular perspective that some books, some paintings and statues, some musical forms have been opening. Without that transcendence of the contemporary I do not believe there is reason to use the word genius. It happens that after twenty-four centuries we continue drawing new stone from the Platonic quarry: Plato still truly lives; he is not yet a past: Plato, consequently, is a genius. Genius, then, is an experimental value. Maeztu today learns in the «Quixote» to order his vision of the world; then Cervantes was not exhausted in the horizon of ideas and emotions of his time: portions of his spirit transcended virginal from that age and today are going about being fecund. Genius is experimental: geniuses are the creations that can still have children, that are living matrices of culture. If genius is what is incommensurable with its time, the anticipation of unlimited possibilities, how to pretend to measure the genius of a man who lives with us, fused with the transitory, the circumstantial, the conventional, the trivial?
Let us leave that word vacant, which would oblige us, to justify it, to be ourselves geniuses; let us reserve it for the divine men in whom humanity has labored itself with examples, and to mark them our religious respect let us fix between them and us the margin of fifty, of sixty years that we may live.
Let us content ourselves with going on describing the elements we find valuable in Zuloaga’s work: let those who understand the technical virtues and vices of his painting specify them. To what point is it, for example, compatible with the title of great painter to profit from others’ manners, to administer, in a word, archaism? Is there or is there not something of this in Zuloaga?
What there certainly is in him is an artist, and that quality perhaps elevates him above the rest of our contemporary production. We possess some good painters; but what is a man who knows how to paint beside an artist? The painter copies a reality that, more or less, was there without need of his intervention: the sun, on a beach, admirably painted: what do I care, if there I have the sun on an admirably real beach, and moreover to go see it I take the train and thus protect the railway industry?
Where does the copy end and the true painting begin? Shall we not place above the one who paints things for us the one who paints us a picture?
In this way I find myself lost in a complicated problem of art, to which I shall seek solution tomorrow. There is nothing so exposed as launching oneself to speak of what one does not know well. By the way, if I do not know more about painting, the blame belongs to the minister of Fine Arts, who does not provide us with sufficient Exhibitions.

I grandi esploratori —Sven Hedin, Peary—, i grandi letterati —France, Lemaître, Pascoli, Bernard Shaw—, i grandi pensatori —Bergson, Croce, Simmel?…
