Creo firmemente —ya lo he dicho— que estas elecciones contribuirán a la consolidación de la República. Pero andan por ahí gentes antirrepublicanas haciendo vagos gestos de triunfo o amenaza, y de otro lado, hay gentes republicanas que sinceramente juzgan la actual situación peligrosa para la República. Pues bien: suponiendo que con alguna verosimilitud sea esto último el caso presente, yo elijo la ocasión de este caso para gritar por vez primera, con los pedazos que me quedan de laringe: «¡Viva la República!» No lo había gritado jamás: ni antes de triunfar ésta ni mucho menos después, entre otras razones porque yo grito muy pocas veces.
I firmly believe —I have already said it— that these elections will contribute to the consolidation of the Republic. But there are anti-republican people around making vague gestures of triumph or menace, and on the other hand, there are republican people who sincerely judge the present situation dangerous for the Republic. Well then: supposing that with some verisimilitude this latter be the present case, I choose the occasion of this case to cry for the first time, with the shreds of larynx that remain to me: «Long live the Republic!» I had never cried it: neither before it triumphed nor much less after, among other reasons because I cry very few times.
Credo fermamente —già l’ho detto— che queste elezioni contribuiranno al consolidamento della Repubblica. Ma girano per lì genti antirepubblicane che fanno vaghi gesti di trionfo o minaccia, e d’altro lato, ci sono genti repubblicane che giudicano sinceramente pericolosa per la Repubblica l’attuale situazione. Orbene: supponendo che con qualche verosimiglianza sia quest’ultimo il caso presente, io scelgo l’occasione di questo caso per gridare per la prima volta, con i pezzi che mi restano di laringe: «Viva la Repubblica!» Non l’avevo mai gridato: né prima che questa trionfasse né tanto meno dopo, tra le altre ragioni perché io grido molto poche volte.
