About Women
In regard to women, nature has resorted to what, in a dramatic sense, might be called a “knockout effect”: it endows them with extraordinary beauty, allure, and vitality for a few short years, at the expense of the rest of their lives. During those years, a man’s imagination is so captivated that he is willing to take on the responsibility of caring for them for the rest of his life—though mere rational consideration seems insufficient to guarantee such commitment. Thus, nature equips women, like all its other creatures, with the tools necessary for ensuring their survival, and does so precisely for the time when they need them—while also exercising its usual restraint in doing so. Just as a female ant loses its unnecessary, even dangerous, wings after mating; similarly, a woman often loses her beauty after giving birth to one or two children—probably for the same reason.
Accordingly, these young girls regard their domestic or commercial pursuits as secondary matters, even perhaps as mere amusement; it is only love, conquests, and things associated with them—such as social activities, dancing, etc.—that they consider their truly serious occupations.
The more noble and perfect something is, the later and more slowly does it reach maturity. Men rarely attain the full development of their reason and mental abilities before the age of twenty-eight; women do so by the age of eighteen. Yet, even after this stage, their reason remains rather limited. Hence, women remain children throughout their lives—they only consider what is immediate, cling to the present, mistake appearances for reality, and give greater importance to trivial matters than to important issues. Reason enables humans, unlike animals, to perceive and contemplate both the past and the future; it is this ability that gives rise to caution, concern, and frequent anxiety. The advantages—and also the disadvantages—of this nature are such that women, due to their weaker reason, are less capable of contributing significantly to society. Their intuitive understanding is sharp in close-range situations but has a narrow scope, failing to grasp distant or future events. As a result, everything that is absent, past, or future has much less impact on them than on men. This also explains why women so frequently exhibit a tendency toward extravagance, which at times borders on madness. Women tend to believe that the purpose of men is to earn money, while their own role is to spend it—preferably during the man’s lifetime, but at least after his death. The fact that men hand over what they have earned for their wives’ support only reinforces this belief. Despite all these disadvantages, there is one positive aspect: women live more in the present than we do, and therefore are able to enjoy things more fully—if such enjoyment is bearable. This leads to a unique kind of happiness that can serve as both recreation and comfort for men who are burdened by worries.
In difficult matters, it is by no means reprehensible to seek the advice of women, in accordance with the practices of the ancient Germans—for their way of viewing things is entirely different from ours. In particular, they tend to focus on the shortest path to a goal and on what is immediately before their eyes; whereas we often overlook such obvious aspects, precisely because they are right before us, and only later need to be reminded of them in order to regain a clearer and simpler perspective. Moreover, women are far more sober-minded than we are; as a result, they see only what actually exists in things, whereas when our passions are aroused, we tend to exaggerate the present or add imagined elements.
It can also be inferred from the same source that women exhibit more compassion and thus more kindness and sympathy toward those in misfortune than men; however, in terms of fairness, integrity, and conscientiousness, they fall short of men. This is because, due to their weaker intellect, what is immediate, tangible, and directly real exerts a much greater influence on them. Abstract ideas, established principles, firm decisions, as well as considerations of the past and future, of things that are absent or distant, rarely have much effect upon them.
Accordingly, injustice is regarded as the fundamental flaw of the female character. It arises first from the aforementioned lack of reason and deliberation; moreover, it is exacerbated by the fact that women, being weaker by nature, rely not on strength but on cunning—hence their instinctive deceitfulness and their inherent tendency to lie. Just as lions are equipped with claws and fangs, elephants with tusks, boars with thorns, bulls with horns, and sepia with its ink that clouds water, so too has nature endowed women with the ability to deceive, for their own protection and defense. All those qualities that nature granted men in the form of physical strength and reason, it has directed towards women through this gift. Deception is therefore innate to them; thus, it is almost as common among foolish women as among clever ones. To employ deception at every opportunity comes naturally to them, just as it is natural for those animals to immediately use their weapons in attack. They even regard such behavior as their rightful right. For this reason, a truly genuine and unfeigned woman may perhaps be impossible to exist. Precisely because of this, they easily see through the deceit of others; therefore, it is not wise to attempt to deceive them. From this fundamental flaw and its associated tendencies arise falsehood, treachery, betrayal, ingratitude, and so on. Women commit perjury far more frequently than men. One might even question whether they should be allowed to take an oath at all. From time to time, one hears of ladies who, having nothing to lose, secretly steal items from shops.
Because, in essence, women exist solely for the purpose of reproducing the species, and their entire destiny revolves around this function; therefore, they live more within the concept of the species than as individual beings. They take the affairs of the species far more seriously than those of the individual. This imparts a certain frivolity to their very nature and behavior, and ultimately leads to a direction that is fundamentally different from that of men—directions that often result in frequent and almost inevitable conflicts within marriage.
Only the male intellect, clouded by sexual desire, could call this low-browed, narrow-shouldered, broad-humped, and short-legged sex “beautiful” – for it is precisely in that desire that all its so-called beauty resides. With even more justification than the female sex, one might label the latter “unesthetic.” They possess neither genuine interest nor true sensitivity toward music, poetry, or the visual arts; their so-called engagement with these fields amounts merely to affectation, done solely for the sake of pleasing themselves. This very fact proves that they are incapable of any purely objective appreciation of anything; and the reason for this, I believe, is as follows: The man strives in everything for direct control over things, either through understanding or through subduing them. But the woman is always forced to rely on indirect means – namely, through the man, whom she must manipulate if she is to achieve any real influence. Hence, it is inherent in a woman’s nature to view everything merely as a means of winning over a man; her so-called participation in other endeavors is always merely a pretense, a mere circumvention, ultimately amounting to flirtation and affectation.
They are the sexus sequior—the inferior gender, the secondary sex that is, in every respect, subordinate; a gender whose weakness ought therefore to be cherished, yet toward which reverence would be utterly ridiculous and only serve to degrade us in their own eyes. When nature divided the human race into two halves, it did not strike the exact midpoint. Despite all this polarity, the difference between the positive and negative poles is not merely qualitative but also quantitative. Indeed, the ancients and Eastern peoples viewed women precisely in this light and thus understood their proper place far more accurately than we have done with our old-French chivalry and unserious veneration of women—that pinnacle of Christian-Germanic stupidity, which has only served to make them arrogant and reckless, to the point where one is sometimes reminded of the sacred monkeys of Benares, who, convinced of their own holiness and invulnerability, permit themselves everything and anything.
Arthur Schopenhauer
